Baze is more prepared. Not by virtue of having been in a similar situation before, but because he once imagined what he would do should the temple come under attack. First, get Chirrut to safety. Second, disable the intruders.

It's the second plan he's putting into action now. He pitches himself out from behind the pillar, ambushing the nearest raider. The man only has a second to turn and raise his gun before Baze viciously strikes at his head, and he crumples. Baze snatches up his weapon from the paving stones and roars, firing at the next man--and the next--pulling the trigger as fast as Baze can.

The massive Guardian takes out three, four, five, six--and turns to the last man. A burst of blaster fire lights up the night, and Baze catches it in the chest. He staggers. With the flash, Baze sees the man--the boy--and nearly lowers his weapon, not wanting to condemn someone so young. Then he thinks of how this man shot at Chirrut--Baze's Chirrut--and fires.
